Buying Snacks For Your Little Ones
I know how exhausting it can be to find healthy snacks for your kiddos. It’s hard enough to find brands you trust for yourself, let alone for the most vulnerable little people in your life. When it comes to prepackaged snacks, I usually stick to a few simple rules of thumb. There are certain ingredients I personally avoid whenever possible:
High Fructose Corn Syrup - Common in sodas and ultra-processed snacks, this sweetener is highly refined and easy to overconsume. Regular intake is associated with blood sugar spikes and metabolic stress especially in growing bodies.
Artificial Sweeteners - These can alter taste preferences and may increase cravings for intensely sweet foods. Little ones are especially sensitive to blood sugar fluctuations and developing taste habits.
Artificial Colors - Food dyes like Red 40 and Yellow 5 have been studied for possible links to behavioral concerns in some children. They don’t provide any nutritional value, so I prefer to skip them when I can.
Industrial Seed Oils - These highly refined oils are common in processed snacks. I opt for snacks made with olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, or grass-fed butter when possible.
In general, I aim for shorter ingredient lists with recognizable, whole-food ingredients.
And a quick note on labels: words like “organic” don’t automatically mean optimal. A product can be organic and still contain highly processed oils or large amounts of added sugar. Marketing can be misleading, so flipping the package over is always worth it.
