6 Days in Kauai
**how to do CHEAP & with kids**
*this is not a bougee itinerary, I am not your gal for that
**
Tips:
The absolute cheapest time of the year to go is February or early March.
The swells are pretty darn big though, so if you are dead set on a boat ride.. go another month or pray pray!
BUT. It’s whale season. So you’ll likely see whales on your boat ride!
The weather is still perfect.
How to book:
Book on Priceline & bundle your plane tickets with hotel. Airbnb is only cheaper if you have another couple & book 7 + months in advance. Take an hour and look through dates for a whole month, if you have flexibility. Typically, it’s cheapest to fly Monday - Wednesday.
The rates will change by a few hundred dollars!
I love travel advisors, but through this whole experience- I realized I can actually do things cheaper myself. They always book luxury hotels. As long as there’s not bugs, I don’t care!
Where to stay:
EAST COAST! EAST COAST!
South coast is for tourists trying to sun bathe and drink. North coast is for adventurers. You’ll want to see all the areas. Staying here helps you get everywhere you want within an hour and a half.
We specifically stayed at Ashton Islander. We picked it because it had a super small kitchenette. Definitely not luxury- but not horrible by any means.
Car Rental:
Rent a Wreck
Family owned business, they specialize in CHEAP rentals. No luxury cars. Dinged mini vans! They were so incredibly kind and easy to work with.

I hear A LOT.. “everything is so expensive in Hawaii”. You’re right. Buuuuut- did anyone tell you that you could stuff an entire suit case full of food? That’s what we did! We ate beef sticks, GoMacro Bars, Just Ingredients Protein Powder, and granola with yogurt. We grilled out for dinner too!
You CAN do it cheap!
Boat ride (550$) + ALL food + + Ben flying to Oahu for the day to see Pearl Harbour + any expense for a family of four we spent roughly 4,500-5,000$
Our plane tickets (3) & hotels were only 3300 including tax!
So you could even do it cheaper than us if you never ate out!
